Tennessee Repertory Theatre will partner with the Frist Center for the Visual Arts for its upcoming installment of the popular REPaloud series. The final staged reading of the 2011-12 season will be Red by John Logan. REPaloud will take place on Friday, February 24 at 6:30 pm and Saturday, February 25 at 2:30 pm at the First Center Auditorium.
The collaboration between Tennessee Rep and the Frist Center coincides with the exhibit ion To See as Artists See: American Art from the Phillips Collection.
“It is a real delight for us to join in a partnership with Tennessee Repertory Theatre to present this staged reading of Red,” said Kim Jameson, Frist Center Educator for Public Programs. “What a wonderful opportunity to delve more deeply into the life and work of Mark Rothko and then be able to walk into the Ingram Gallery to see his work. The intersection of visual art and theatre is one that is dynamic and exciting and one we are pleased to be able to present.”
About the show: Winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, Red paints the vivid picture of master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko who has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, Red is a searing portrait of an artist's ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.
Tennessee Rep Producing Artistic Director René D. Copeland will direct. Chip Arnold will helm the role of Mark Rothko. Jake Speck is also featured in the staged reading of Red.
