THE COLOR PURPLE Closes 3/28 at TPAC

The producing team of the Broadway smash hit THE COLOR PURPLE, The Musical about Love, is proud to announce that the Tennessee Performing Arts Center will host the national touring production of THE COLOR PURPLE for eight performances, March 23-28, 2010.

Nominated for eleven Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, THE COLOR PURPLE opened on December 1, 2005 at the Broadway Theatre where it ran for over two record-breaking years. It is based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the moving film by Steven Spielberg. It is the unforgettable and inspiring story of a woman named Celie, who finds the strength to triumph over adversity, and discover her unique voice in the world. With a joyous GRAMMY®-nominated score featuring gospel, jazz, pop and the blues, THE COLOR PURPLE is about hope and the healing power of love.

THE COLOR PURPLE features a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Grammy Award®-winning composers/lyricists Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and choreography by Donald Byrd. Rounding out the creative team are Tony Award®-winner John Lee Beatty (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes) and Tony Award®-winner Brian MacDevitt (lighting).

Part of HCA/TriStar Broadway at TPAC and in partnership with Doubletree Hotel Downtown Nashville, tickets to THE COLOR PURPLE are on sale now, and range from $25-70, depending upon performance time and seat locations. For tickets, visit www.tpac.org/colorpurple, call 615/782-4040, or visit the TPAC Box Office (Downtown or at Davis-Kidd Booksellers in The Mall at Green Hills). For groups of 20 or more, contact TPAC Group Sales at 615/782-4060 or groups@tpac.org.

THE COLOR PURPLE is produced by Joyful Noisemakers, LLC, helmed by Stephen Kane and Michael McFadden who collectively share theatrical touring credits spanning nearly three decades on four continents. These gentlemen have long been principal partners of Phoenix Entertainment and have an impressive international production repertoire that includes the following featured touring ventures: Grease starring Frankie Avalon, The Will Rogers Follies starring Larry Gatlin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Gypsy, Man of La Mancha, The Pajama Game, Fame, Godspell, The Vagina Monologues, The King & I, Smokey Joe's Café, Singin' in the Rain, Buddy, Ring of Fire and Late Nite Catechism, among others.

The original cast recording is available on EMI/Angel Records, and THE COLOR PURPLE: A Memory Book of the Broadway Musical (Avalon/Carroll & Graf) is available now in bookstores.

Please note that this show contains some adult language and content.

This performance of THE COLOR PURPLE is part of the HCA/TriStar Broadway at TPAC series, and is in partnership with Doubletree Hotel Downtown Nashville. Institutional sponsors for TPAC include American Airlines and Coca-Cola. Nissan North America, Inc. is a Sustaining Partner for TPAC. Media sponsors for THE COLOR PURPLE are the Tennessean, WQQK 92Q, and WSMV Channel 4.

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center is a private, non-profit corporation dedicated to providing and supporting the presentation of the performing arts to the citizens of Tennessee. Its four stages are home to Broadway in Nashville at TPAC, Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, Tennessee Repertory Theatre and a variety of special engagements. TPAC administers one of the largest and most comprehensive arts-in-education programs in the United States, offering learning opportunities for children and adults. The organization has served more than 1.5 million students from pre-school to high school over the past two decades. For more information, visit the web site, www.tpac.org.
