A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE Opens 11/6 at Roxy Regional Theatre, Clarksville 2009/11/01

Blanche DuBois brings her charm to downtown Clarksville, with the Roxy Regional Theatre's production of Tennessee Williams' classic A Streetcar Named Desire, opening Friday, November 6 and continuing through November 21..

Blanche arrives by streetcar at the New Orleans home of her sister Stella, claiming to have taken time off from her schoolteaching job. Blanche settles in, oblivious to the strain her presence causes Stella and her husband, Stanley Kowalski. Stanley, an alpha male in every way, is a force to be reckoned with, and as Blanche's stories of her genteel Southern lifestyle begin to dissolve beneath Stanley's brutal scrutiny, she attempts to elevate herself through greater self-deception.

Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning draama skillfully pits Stanley's raw aggression against Blanche's pretentious, delicate demeanor. The play candidly exposes the dynamic conflict that was growing between new and old America in the mid-1940s.

Opening weekend of the Roxy Regional Theatre's production will feature two very special evenings: opening night is "Pay What You Can" night, where each audience member decides their own ticket price. Saturday's performance features a themed dinner at Lovin' Spoonful Café at 6:30 p.m., and then a performance at the Roxy. The Louisiana-inspired menu features andouille sausage gumbo, mixed green salad with orange-honey dressing, Creole corn bread and pineapple-apple bread pudding with bourbon sauce.

Performances of A Streetcar Named Desire are November 6-21, with a 7 p.m. curtain Wednesday and Thursday nights, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. A special 2 p.m. matinee will be staged on Saturday, November 14. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 13 and younger. Jeffrey Ellis is a Nashville-based writer, editor and critic, who's been covering the performing arts in Tennessee for more than 20 years. He is the recipient of the Tennessee Theatre Association's Distinguished Service Award for his coverage of theatre in the Volunteer State and was the founding editor/publisher of Stages, the Tennessee Onstage Monthly. He is a past fellow of the National Critics Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center and was the founder/executive producer of the First Night Awards, which honored outstanding productions and performances throughout the state.
